In 2024, the Department of Justice finalized new rules under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) that set a specific technical standard for state and local government websites: WCAG 2.1 AA. That covers things like color contrast, keyboard navigation, screen reader compatibility, and accessible PDFs.
The deadline depends on your size. Governments serving 50,000 or more residents must comply by April 26, 2027. Smaller governments and special districts have until April 26, 2028.
One detail that catches teams off guard: existing pages, documents, and forms already on your website are generally in scope, not just new content. The deadline is real, and it's worth planning for now.
Accessibility works best when it's part of how content gets created, not something checked after the fact.
